Overview

Nestled in the iconic Edificio Copan within São Paulo’s Centro Histórico, Tem Umami offers a uniquely aromatic and flavorful coffee shop experience. This intimate spot blends the rich cultural tapestry of Brazil with innovative twists on classic pastries and desserts, making it a must-visit for both locals and travelers seeking authentic yet inventive flavors.

The heart of Tem Umami’s appeal lies in its artisanal menu, showcasing exquisite creations such as Sorvete de Paçoca and Panetone de Cupuaçu. These signature items represent a masterful fusion of traditional Brazilian ingredients and refined patisserie techniques. The array of panetones available — salted versions with cheese fillings, classic pistachio and apricot, and chocolate varieties — highlight the café’s commitment to quality craftsmanship and ingredient diversity.

Alongside these delights, Tem Umami shines with its delicate French-inspired offerings: the Canelé de Pistache and Canelé com Cacau are particularly praised for their perfect balance of texture and flavor, while the Macaron de Pistache introduces a subtle nuttiness that complements the robust coffee served. The café’s coffee, described fondly as “bom café” and “cafezinho,” pairs beautifully with their sweets, offering a harmonious and satisfying tasting experience.

The ambiance, though limited by the space constraints inherent to its location, holds an inviting charm. Situated in the bustling Edificio Copan, Tem Umami’s atmosphere is intimate. The seating options, while basic and sometimes improvised, encourage visitors to linger briefly or grab their treats to go, reflecting a casual coffee break rather than a prolonged cafe dwell. This makes Tem Umami particularly appealing to those exploring São Paulo’s historic center or office workers looking for quality coffee and pastries during their day.

Customer experiences underline the café’s originality and flavor quality. Visitors come drawn by the alluring aromas that permeate the Copan building’s ground floor — an olfactory invitation difficult to resist. While some have noted occasional servicewide interruptions, the consistent enthusiasm for the panettones, cannelés, and ice creams speaks to a passionate, skilled team behind the counter. The use of regional ingredients such as cupuaçu and paçoca further roots the menu in Brazilian culinary heritage, offering authentic tastes with a contemporary edge.

Tem Umami caters to those who appreciate artisanal craftsmanship and are eager to explore desserts and coffee beyond the ordinary. Whether you’re intrigued by innovative ice cream variations or exceptional baked goods, this coffee shop offers a rich, flavorful journey in the heart of São Paulo’s historic district.

We came for the pistachio ice cream on the croissant cone, but there wasn’t any at that day. So we ended up having almost one of each of the available options. It was pretty good and very different from standard ice cream places. There was a lot of problems with energy breakages though. Also very limited ambiance since the improvised chairs stand outside across the street from the shop.

We discovered this tiny café literally after being bewitched by the luscious smell of Cannelés and coffee which perfumed the ground floor of Copan building. The smell of it was so irresistible that we ended up at the counter ordering a couple of cannelés and coffee: we left the place licking our fingers and we even got an entire Panettone to bring home! The sweetness of it was well balanced (which we appreciated since Brazilians tend to put way too much sugar on everything), everything seemed to have been made with quality ingredients, the waitress was so sweet and friendly as well! Hats off to the baker who seems to be so passionate about his work. This place was definitely one of our greatest discoveries during our sojourn in São Paulo :)
